Sometimes, you’ll have an idea of where you want your story to go, and that’s great, you should always try to map out your stories and have a goal.
However, you need to keep your character’s traits in mind, and let them guide you through your story. Sometimes what you want to happen won’t happen because your character wouldn’t let it happen, or let it happen that way.
It can be disappointing when the story doesn’t turn out how you want it, but that’s part of writing and being a good writer.
Oh yes, character derailment for the sake of getting a certain plot out is bad. Let your characters tell you where they want to go, listen to their desires, goals, and motivations. They might well help you shape your stories in ways that will be much more interesting than an arc you try to smush them into against their will.
